Andres Bonifacio was born to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro, a Spanish mestiza, in a shack in Tondo, Manila on November 30, 1863, and was the eldest of five children. His father was a tailor while his mother worked at a cigarette factory. When he was seven, he had to quit school because both his parents died of illness, and he needed to support his brothers and sisters. In his late teens, he worked in a British trading firm and later in a German trading firm. He was also a part time actor who performed in plays. Due to not finishing his education, he was self educated by reading books such as French revolution, biographies of U.S presidents, and different novels. Aside from Tagalog and Spanish, He could speak a little English as well. He was married twice and had one son, who died in infancy.
Andres Bonifacio was a Freemason and a member of the Gran Oriente Espanol, and in 1892 he joined Rizal's La Liga Filipina. Once Rizal was captured, he decided the only way to be freed was to fight. On July 7, 1892 he created and founded the secret society that aimed to overthrow the Spanish sovereignty in the Philippines known as the K.K.K. (Kaataastaasan Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng Mga Anak ng Bayan). Andres Bonifacio is also known as the ''Great Plebian.'' because he and Emilio Jacinto issued stirring literature to arouse people to revolt against the Spaniards. When Jose Rizal was executed in 1896, Andres Bonifacio declared the Philippines independent from the Spanish rule. The Spaniards pursued him, and he fled into hiding. Meanwhile, Emilio Aguinaldo took over the Filipino Army. When Bonifacio came out of hiding, he tried to retake control of the Katipunan, but Aguinaldo had him arrested. Filipino war hero Andres Bonifacio was executed under the orders of Emilio Aguinaldo on May 10, 1897.
I believe that he is also a national hero because he began the first Philippine Revolution against Spain. It is true that Andres Bonifacio was inspired and got the idea of freedom from Jose Rizal, but Andres Bonifacio believed that, for the revolution to be effective it has to be put in action.
